There’s no denying that Saturday Night Live is about the furthest removed from its status as a cultural benchmark as it’s ever been, but sometimes it seems like it was a case of the whole being less than the sum of its parts.  Especially when those parts include performers like Kristen Wiig, who – for the past 7 years – has sometimes been the best part in sub-par sketches.  And last night – which was also the 37th season finale – was her last time in Studio 8H as a regular cast member.  After a show that was fronted by host/musical guest Mick Jagger (who performed with Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters and Jeff Beck), featured cute little guest spots by Jon Hamm and Steve Martin and premiered the sequel to “Lazy Sunday,” Lorne Michels, the cast and a few alums (Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch and Christ Kattan) got together to bid Ms. Wiig adieu.

Definitely a very sweet moment.  Not sweet enough to give it a bump in the ratings, apparently, but sweet nonetheless.  So all the best to Kristen Wiig and maybe we’ll get word about Jason Sudeikis and Andy Samberg soon – the two other cast mates whose contracts are up but have yet to reveal whether they’re staying or going.
