Back with another serving of macabre developments…

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, Michael J. Bassett’s follow-up to the 2005 film, will finally be receiving a wide theatrical release this Halloween from Open Road Films.  The plot revolves around Heather Mason (Adelaide Clemens) discovering on the eve of her 18th birthday that she is not who she thought she was.  After the disappearance of her father, her journey takes her to Silent Hill.  Kit Harrington, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Malcolm McDowell fill out the newcomers.  Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean, and Deborah Kara Unger return to reprise their roles from Gans film.

Jared Harris has been cast in the lead for Hammer Films’ The Quiet Ones, which “tells the story of an unorthodox, but charismatic professor who uses controversial methods and leads his best students off the grid to take part in a dangerous experiment:  to create a poltergeist from negative human energy.”  Production begins in June.  Nic Cage was previously courted for the lead.

Anchor Bay Films has acquired North American distribution rights for Amy Heckerling’s Vamps.  A release near Halloween is planned.  Knowing Anchor Bay, it will likely see a limited theatrical run before going VOD.  The horror-comedy stars Alicia Silverstone, Krysten Ritter, Justin Kirk, Wallace Shawn, Malcolm McDowell, and Sigourney Weaver.

Outpost: Rise of the Spetnaz has begun filming.  It is the third in the series after Outpost and Outpost: Black Sun.  The new film will trace the origins of the supernatural soldiers.  While I’ve yet to see any of them, I’ve heard the first (which stars Ray Stevenson) is pretty damn good.

New U.S. poster

Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) will direct Afterburn.  Previously an Antoine Fuqua project, the tale “is set in a future where solar flares have left half the world a ravaged wasteland filled with mutants and pirates. Buried beneath the ash and rubble are priceless artifacts and some of the world’s most valuable works of art – for which wealthy Americans will pay any price. The story centers on a treasure hunter who leads his team into the quarantine zone, braving rival bounty hunters, rogue armies, pirate gangs and deadly mutants along the way.” Gerard Butler is currently attached to star.  Wirkola will be doing his own rewrite before the project moves forward.  No production timeline has been given.

Principal photography has begun on Vincenzo Natali’s next film, Haunter.  Abigail Breslin, Stephen McHattie, Peter Outerbridge, Michelle Nolden, and David Hewlett star.  Described as a “reverse ghost story” the film revolves around a teen (Breslin) and her family who died in the ’80s at the hands of something evil.  The ghostly teen must reach out to her present day counterpart now living in the house to prevent the same thing from happening them.

Can you find him?

The monster-ridden TV series that Eli Roth is doing for Netflix is finally gearing up and the man seems decidedly excited about the fact that he won’t have to worry about ratings or censorship when it comes to the subject matter.  He seems hellbent on bringing us a no-holds barred R/NC-17 rated horror show and the enthusiasm is a bit infectious.  Like most of Netflix’s other planned shows, all episodes (13 in this case) will go up simultaneously instead of being staggered over weeks on end.  Hemlock Grove sounds like it could be a blast to this horror fan.  Read everything Roth has to say here and decide whether you agree.

Bill Murray is still taunting fans with the notion that Ghostbusters III is STILL a possibility.  For the sake of all of us, I wish he’d just nix it and be done with the whole thing.

And finally, Renn might have brought you a picture of Hitchcock, but I’ve got one better.  How about some Witchcock?

SFX test still from Rob Zombie’s Lords of Salem
