Among the foreign language nominees for this year’s Academy Awards is a film distributed by the Alamo Drafthouse, which I think most geeks would agree is a company full of “the good guys.” Their distribution effort is a huge endorsement of the Belgium film in and of itself, but with all kinds of outside critical acclaim and, of course, the nomination from the academy, there is plenty of signs pointing to to this being a film we should all see.
This Friday people in select cities/states — namely New York, California, and Austin, TX — will get their chance to see this film about dark pasts and even darker presents. You can find out more about specific theaters here.
Perhaps the year’s most stunning international debut, Michael R. Roskam’s BULLHEAD is a harrowing tale of revenge, redemption and fate. Domineering cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille (Matthias Schoenaerts in a ferocious breakout performance), constantly pumped on steroids and hormones, initiates a shady deal with a notorious mafioso meat trader. When an investigating federal agent is assassinated and a woman from his traumatic past resurfaces, Jacky must confront his demons and face the far-reaching consequences of his decisions. Acclaimed at festivals worldwide including the Berlin Film Festival, AFI Fest and Fantastic Fest, the award-winning BULLHEAD is visceral thriller bursting with rage that TwitchFilm calls “one of the most original crime films in recent memory.”
The film has a post-nomination trailer that sells the film as some kind of mix of Bronson and Shame. Self-destruction, the underworld, traumatic childhood events, women… all the elements are in play.
If you’re not sold on the film (which would be weird) then luckily two clips from the film are available, with the first having surfaced on Hitfix today, and the later on Awards Daily last week. The first is a bit more revealing, giving you a glimpse at one of the flashback scenes, while the second is a brief look at the scene around which the trailer is cut.
