I don’t actively enjoy being a downer about things like Machete but while I can bear an exploitation cheese-fest being dumb, it being boring is something I can not abide. A lot of other folks found themselves perfectly entertained by the first feature-length expansion of the Grindhouse trailer though (~$45m worth), so another action ultra-cheapie is on its way. We’ve known Robert Rodriguez planned to make another film since forever, but he’s now in active partnership with a guy named Alexander Rodnyansky who has bucks to spend.
What’s nice is that this news from Deadline does actually come with a new synopsis for the follow-up:
The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.
An eccentric villain, a mission that gives Machete plenty of dudes to kill, and a threat that makes it entirely likely Machete can do something ridiculous like go to space and hack the satellite in half with his steel… these all sound like the proper ingredients for this kind of film. If they avoid too much stunt casting, get a better villain than Steven “Fuckoff” Segal, and actually focus the movie on Machete, then there might be a fun, violent ride worth engaging with this time.
The plan is to start in April, and RR’s pace will likely ensure that happens. Considering he starred in Vampires Suck, there’s absolutely no chance of Trejo passing up the film under any circumstances, so Machete will indeed Kills.
