Ridley Scott has been talking to the Wall Street Journal blog Speakeasy, and he’s been talking about making a (maybe) sequel to his 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner. And he’s talking about making it soon, and is in fact honing in on the right writer to deliver a script based on his ideas. This has been rumored to be in the works since Scott started shooting his Alien prequel Prometheus, but this seems like the first definitive word from the director that this is in fact, on the table.
Is this a good idea? I’m not sure. I’m not sure that the world needs a sequel to Blade Runner. But that all depends on how it’s done. A stand-alone story that takes place in the Blade Runner universe could work just fine. It all depends on how successful Prometheus is on an artistic level. If Ridley still has the chops for sci-fi, I’m all for it. I mean, if someone has to make another Blade Runner movie, I want it to be Ridley. But I don’t care to know what happened to Deckard or anything. Besides, we know what happened. He died because he’s a replicant. Duh.
