After thousands of words spilled, millions of comments tweeted, and a general consensus of “Netflix… you fuckin’ up,” the company has officially canceled their plans to split streaming services and DVD rentals into two different companies.
You can read what was the whole elaborate reasoning and set-up right here, but like so many things in this internet age, a simple blog post has made all of it null-and-void seemingly moments after it was relevant. In fact, the news marks a particularly anti-climactic end to the whole debacle as even the Netflix explanation is rather curt:
It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.
This means no change: one website, one account, one password… in other words, no Qwikster.
While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.
Considering the lengths Netflix has gone to over-explain all of their big decisions in the last few months, that’s especially simple.
Now the company gets to focus on competing in a streaming marketplace that grows ever tougher, and is only going to get more complex as companies like Amazon find new ways to grab subscribers. Considering how quick people seemed to be ready to throw the company under the bus after the one-two punch of a price-change and a services split… it’s no wonder they decided to call a do-over.
