It’s interesting watching James Cameron come out of his decade long slumber, getting ready to start on his next film, the mysterious Project 880 (which we’re all pretty sure is Avatar, a script he abandoned a couple of years back… or so we thought! DUN DUN DUN). He’s making the rounds and dropping hints and quips, and he’s had some interesting things to say.
He told Business Week that Project 880 is going to be presaged by an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, for those of you out there with real lives) which will allow players to explore that film’s universe: "So much of literary sci-fi is about creating worlds that are rich and detailed and make sense at a social level," Cameron says. "We’ll create a world for people and then later present a narrative in that world."
I have recently tried out World of Warcraft, one of the bigger MMORPGs out there, and I can say that there are fun aspects to it, but that I sort of don’t get the concept on a fundamental level. I don’t understand the appeal of playing with, instead of against, other people. But then I have socialization issues.
He also gave a very great interview to Quint over at Aint It Cool News. Quint doesn’t go after Project 880 dirt, but instead gets the man to open up about a lot of things, including how his brain is softening: “Then I saw ALIEN VS PREDATOR and it was actually pretty good. (laughs) I think of the 5 ALIEN films, I’d rate it 3rd.”
Head over to Aint It Cool to read the whole thing.
