If my title sounds awfully snide, it’s only because I think Zach G. is among the greatest living comedians, is responsible for some of my favorite stand-up, and is ultimately aware of the irony himself.

Regardless, news is spreading fast about the plot of the Hangover III, which Zach alluded to in an interview with Rolling Stone that is currently being teased. There’s not much to it, but it’s definitely a little different than 1 and 2

“They want to do a Hangover III,” he says. “I’m getting fricking phone calls already.” According what he’s heard, the plot ditches the format of the first two and focuses on his character escaping from a mental institution with help from the wolf pack.

To be honest, I could give a fuck about the complaints that Hangover 2 apes the structure of the first film. That’s the point, and I’ll be far less interested if they complete disregard it for the 3rd film. Their primary goal should be to make the film funnier goddammit. What the hell is the use of a more generalized kooky comedy from this particular crew of comedians if the structure on which their dynamic is based is removed. Find freshness in the scenes, the moments, the situations- but make it a Hangover movie or don’t do it all. If it becomes something else then it has no chance of being good, or should just be an original comedy! That’s how I feel, but I’m silly.

Of course, Zach G. is an amazing comedian so there’s much more interesting shit to be mined form the article (which I can’t wait to read at length) than a nothing tidbit about a film that’s still years out. As I mentioned in the title, there’s a good bit of focus on how much he’s rejecting the typical tact and Hollywoodness that comes with fame- something even detectable in The Hangover quote. But there seem to be a ton of great stories from him about moving in the Hollywood circles and just generally being amazing. Take for example the time he met Ke$ha (who I would quite literally be happy to throw into the sun before any terrorist on this planet, believe me when I say that).

“I saw that Ke$ha woman the other day,” he says. She’d e-mailed him about getting a drink, and a few days later, he ran into her in a bar. “She was sitting by herself, and I walked up to her and said, ‘Listen, I got your e-mail. Your music is really bad! I don’t know who listens to it, but I imagine it’s, like, six-year-olds – and it’s a bad message.’ ”

It would be quite a coup for Zach to refuse to do another Hangover, but the fun he has with the crew, the check, and a contract will ultimately ensure he’s there for it. As long as he doesn’t forget about stand-up or Between Two Ferns, I won’t hold it against him. He’s not the first transgressive artist to have difficulty travailing the road of success while trying to keep what makes him special alive.
