Did you miss Towel Day yesterday? I sure did- was planning on finally starting up Dirk Gently and everything! No one ever mistook me for a hoopy frood.

One company that definitely didn’t miss the occassion was Hothead Games, the guys behind the surprisingly good Penny Arcade RPGs as well as the utterly hilarious DeathSpank games, both series which were aided by one Ron Gilbert (Monkey Island). They announced that they’re working on a new videogame adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy… but not much more than that! Here’s the full press release.

Hail people of Earth! Megadodo Publications is pleased to announce that we are working with the interactive entertainment development team Hothead Games to bring The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the standard repository for all knowledge and wisdom, to the farthest uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy. This new edition of The Guide will be available not only on your planet but also on all nearby systems including Alpha Centauri.

The quirky and hilarious universe that Douglas Adams created became an instant classic for so many. The site has nothing yet. No word on what type of game, what platform, release date, or the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

This of course isn’t the first adaptation of the series, as there was a great text-based adventure game put out by Infocom back in 1984. You can try it out for yourself in a couple of ways. A few years ago the BBC has a contest where people put visuals to the text game and you can play both winners from the competition for free in your browser on their official site. Ain’t technology grand?
