Last month brought brand new details on the Legendary Pictures reboot of Godzilla, and they made it clear that this is a project on the move. We learned that 2012 is the target date for release, 3D is a given, there’s a strong chance of other monsters, and the producers see it as a modern but respectful restart in the vein of Batman Begins. It was quite a surprise then, to hear rumors of director courting so soon before we even knew the definitively story on the script, which has a numbers of rumors surrounding it as well. Even more baffling was that the mentioned name was Guillermo Del Toro, who has literally three-hundred and forty-five thousand projects currently in the works, including a life-long dream picture produced by James Cameron. In other words, how the hell would that even have worked?
Nonetheless, the story spread quickly and it took Drew McWeeny contacting the director and getting the following bullet to blast into the face of this rumor…
“I am not involved in Godzilla at all… I haven’t read it or plan to read it. Nor have I been approached to direct it.”
…apparently McWeeny had to explain to Del Toro that there even was such a rumor.
The principles on this Godzilla project should start emerging soonish, but not quite this fast. If the sweeping and immediate buzz on just this one simple rumor is any indication though, there is a real geek hunger and excitement for the idea of a well-done American Godzilla film.
