Slashfilm is reporting that Paul Verhoeven went on a Dutch TV show and announced a new project he has in the hopper – The Hidden Force. Verhoeven has been MIA since his excellent Black Books four or five years ago, and every time he seems to have something new going, it doesn’t get anywhere. Here’s how he describes The Hidden Force:
“[The movie is about] rebellion against colonial rule, the emergence of fundamentalist Islam, the behavior between people, adultery and psychic powers. It is a story about things that we do not understand but it does happen.”
The movie would be based on a book written in 1900 by Louis Couperus about the fall of Dutch colonialism in what is now Indonesia. It follows Dutchman Van Oudyck as he is unable to understand the locals and their supernatural abilities. Or something. It sounds cool, anyway. And it was previously adapted for Dutch TV.
I just hope Verhoeven gets something going soon. I can never get enough of his craziness.
