Here’s a good way to judge the veracity of a rumor: Did it come from Mark Millar? If so, approach with a hefty helping of skepticism! Millar is perhaps the premiere confabulator in the comic book world – remember when he was talking to Warner Bros about a Superman trilogy? – and every time he says something on his message board I sort of assume it’s not true. You’d be surprised how many ‘scoops’ we get sent that are traced back to something Millar claimed on his message board or in an interview.
But when the guy puts out a press release I have to at least pay some attention. I mean, a dude wouldn’t bald-faced lie in a press release, right? He’s not Nixon, for Christ’s sake.
Well, unless he wants a lot of coverage for his new project, some kind of anthology comic strip magazine. In that case a guy might exaggerate a bit about the fate of Kick-Ass 2, which he says will be called Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall. He might say that the film is coming in 2012 just so he can interest you in the Kick-Ass story he’ll be serializing in that magazine, to be called CLiNT (no clue).
You can read the entire press release here. In the meantime I would take this with a major grain of salt; Matthew Vaughn is going to be in production on X-Men: First Class right up until the film’s release. I don’t know that he would want to jump right into Kick-Ass 2 immediately, as he would have to if the film were to make a 2012 date. I think that a Kick-Ass 2 is possible, especially because the film’s initial investors are walking away from the movie very happy, but until someone who isn’t Mark Millar tells me it’s happening I’ll assume it’s not happening.
