Blofeld couldn’t do it. Jaws failed. Even smashing his balls with a knotted rope couldn’t finish off James Bond. It took a financial crisis to do it.

The crisis in question is MGM’s wobbly position as it faces a very uncertain future. With MGM as the home of James Bond, that puts 007 in his worst death trap yet. And so the producers at EON have delayed the next Bond film… indefinitely.

They sent out a release today: “Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on BOND 23 indefinitely. We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of BOND 23,” stated Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli jointly.

I wonder if Wilson and Broccoli are sharing a drink with Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro, who have also seen MGM’s problems stall their next project.

What’s the future of James Bond? It’s going to be a while before we know where his next home will be, to say nothing of his next adventure.
