The scuttlebutt of the day is that Robbert Pattinson will be portraying Kurt Cobain, so says RadarOnline. I’ve seen the story both ways so far from several sources and will probably have to do one or more updates depending on how it goes. But let’s play devil’s advocate and say it pans out. It’s easy to take jabs at Pattinson in the wake of the whole Twilight phenomenon’s onslaught of the past couiple of years. Truth is, though, I really know nothing of the guy. I haven’t caught either of his turns as the tan-challenged Edward yet and haven’t made any plans to do so. Although on a side note, I did DVR Twilight during a free preview weekend a couple of weeks ago, thinking it might be the best shot to see it without having to pay for it in any way whatsoever. Then I inadvertently deleted it. I wasn’t devastated by the loss.
Anyway, getting back to Pattinson, here’s the story as RadarOnline had it: Pattinson has been in talks with Cobain’s widow Courtney Love, the UK Sun reported, adding that the Twilight star is enamored with the role since he considers himself a musician first, then an actor. “This is a big money deal for Courtney — she has agreed to the film on condition that she gets
to decide the main aspects of the project including director, casting,
screenplay and music,” the source said. “Robert has been calling and
emailing her non-stop… she has been a bit wound up by his manners,
but he is her number one choice to play Kurt.”
Considering that (dubious?) part of the statement that Pattinson considers himself a musician first, if true, I’m wondering if he would ever pull a Val Kilmer and do the singing himself. On another side note, I’m also wondering if we’re ever going to be treated to an eventual “30 Odd Foot of Pattinson” one day. Regardless, this would be the chance for Pattinson to transcend Twilight if he is ever going to do it. Because Kurt Cobain sure as hell ain’t no performance on which an actor can coast by on looks alone. Pattinson’s going to have to bring his Kilmer-esque The Doors a-game on this. If he has one. And if the story is legit of course. Otherwise, this is all just an exercise in desktop publishing.
Side Note #3: Eclipse or Breaking Dawn DVD Extra suggestion: Kristen Stewart / Pattinson as Joan Jett / Kurt Cobain duet.
Thanks to Robert for the tip. However it goes.
