I finally caught up to the finale of Y The Last Man a couple of months ago and I have to say that I was blown away by how Brian K Vaughn and Pia Guerra ended their comic book about the last man left alive after a mysterious incident wipes out all remaining males. Smartly shifting away from the question of how the male apocalypse happened, Vaughn and Guerra instead focused on some excellent character storytelling and created one of the best last issues I have ever read.
After finishing that up I realized we had dodged a bullet when DJ Caruso fell off the film version of Y. But now Latino Review reports Louis Leterrier is sniffing around the property, and while I like Leterrier a lot (I haven’t seen Clash of the Titans yet), nothing in his filmography tells me that he’s the guy to turn to for a highly emotional story like Y.
Then again, I don’t think this is a single movie property either. But if it were up to me I’d hire someone who doesn’t do scifi or action movies or comic book movies and make sure the characters and their stories were covered – the action isn’t the book’s main component anyway. In my world Rian Johnson gets hired to direct Y The Last Man – and there’s at least two pictures in the deal, maybe a trilogy.
