Finally
EC Segar’s true vision will be brought to life, as Sony has embarked on
a quest to make a CGI Popeye movie, and in 3D no less.
Popeye
has been in character jail for decades now; aside from a couple of
half-assed cartoons, the last time the general population really got an
eyeful of the Sailor Man was in 1980, when Robin Williams was coked to
the gills on the set of Robert Altman’s bizarrely great film version.
Avi
Arad, who used to run Marvel Studios, is the producer on this new
cartoon. He promises that all the usual suspects – Olive Oyl, Bluto,
Swee’pea – will be in it. And get his vision for the movie:
Arad
says the new version will cover the themes of friendship, love, greed
and life, and focus on human strengths and human frailties.
I
love it. It’s a fucking cartoon! Back off the thematic weight and have
Popeye punch Bluto into orbit.
Mike Jones is writing the script. I
don’t know who that is in Hollywood, so I’m hoping it’s the rapper who
put his phone number in one of his songs. I like that guy.
