The Lowdown

As is hinted at above, this DVD feels more like what you would find as a bonus disc in the boxed set. To make matters worse, the stunts are not edited into episodic form and are instead all lumped together as a set of 93 segments. For certain notable segments such as “Satan vs. God”, where Chris Pontius dresses as Satan and protests God’s presence in California, this makes sense. However, it is unlikely that the vast majority of these will be known to or sought by the viewer. So you are likely to just watch the whole thing until you get bored and lose interest.

Of the previously unseen segments, most stand out due to their grossness. If you like seeing Dave England vomit for extended periods of time, this DVD is for you. One sketch that is particularly hard to watch is where Dave eats the ingredients of an omelet and attempts to barf them into a skillet and cook it. Lucky for us, he is unable to throw up enough of the ingredients and has to attempt it several times. I cannot imagine how disgusting this must have smelled while cooking, but Steve-O decides to try it and as expected throws up too. Not all of the segments are of the gross-out variety, the “Self-Defense Test” that inspired the creation of this show is present as well, but it is hardly revelatory. There are also some segments that start to show what ultimately killed the show; they are immediately recognized.

All in all, it makes sense to own this DVD if you already have the box set and wish to fill out any gaps that may be present. Even then, I cannot imagine paying full retail for this disc and I would probably wait until it hits the $5 bin at Walmart.

The Package

The special features have many of the same issues, “Hi, I’m Johnny Knoxville” is a montage of various cold opens and just lasts too long. Similarly, Credit Montages is a montage of closing credits segments. The Jackassworld material may be the most interesting footage on the whole disc. It is a sampling of the Jackass content that is posted to the web at Jackassworld.com. What looks particularly promising is “One bourbon, one scotch, and one beer” where Johnny Knoxville gets wasted with celebs such as Jay Chandrasekhar.
