Your inner cynic told you that a title as fun and lightly edgy as A Couple of Dicks wasn’t going to make it all the way to theaters -even with basterds and (kicked) asses flying around the multiplexes these days- and you were right.
Kevin Smith (via his twitter feed) recently set the stage for the new title when he coyly announced that a decision had been made:
The Movie Formerly Known as A COUPLE OF DICKS has finally settled on a (network-policy-dictated) replacement title! While we’ll always have DICKS in our hearts, the title we just now locked makes me smile on a bunch of different levels – including this 1: we can now advertise our movie properly (& ironically). And said marketing begins… on every print of SHERLOCK HOLMES, Christmas Day!
Now The Film Stage have brought us a list of trailer allocations for late December and it’s pretty clear that WB has settled on the title Cop Out for Kevin Smith’s latest.
* Sherlock Holmes: (ATT) Clash Of The Titans (TR1) / Inception (TR2) – COMBO RT 2:30 – New Trailer
* Sherlock Holmes: (ACC) >>> Cop Out <<< (TR1) New Trailer
* It’s Complicated: Valentine’s Day (TR3)
* Nine (Expansion): Valentine’s Day (TR3)
* Up In The Air (Expansion): Edge Of Darkness (TR1)
* The Road (Expansion): Edge of Darkness (TR1)
We’ve done the awkward back-and-forth sidewalk shuffle with the title of this movie long enough and at the end of the day, who gives a fuck? There’s even an argument that the watered-down title is actually clever, but I’m much more interested in that upcoming trailer and getting an idea of whether or not Smith is getting good work out of Morgan. If the trailer gives any indication that Morgan has the material to deliver an all-cylinders-firing performance that has real chemistry with Willis, than this has the chance to jump up on the anticipation list for 2010.
