Disney has cast Donna Murphy (Spider-Man 2, The Fountain) as Mother Gothel (the witch) in their upcoming animated feature Rapunzel.
She’ll be voicing a character alongside Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, and
Chuck himself, Zachary Levi, as the prince (or “bandit” apparently).
The
story, if you had no childhood, is about a girl trapped in a tower by
an evil witch. The girl’s long hair allows a prince to come to her
rescue, with varying degrees of success, depending on the version of
the story you hear. Some tellings have the prince blinded when he falls
into a pile of thorns at the bottom of the tower, while Rapunzel is
cast out into the woods. Intense. My only real frame of reference on
this particularly fairy tale is this:
…which is obviously amazing (still have that VHS somewhere).
The folks behind Bolt (Nathan Greno who was Head of Story, and director Byron Howard) are helming the picture, which is reasonably good news- Bolt
was an extremely competent kid’s film and deserved more love than it
ended up getting. The opening alone was worth the price of admission.
Rapunzel will be released (in 3D of course!) on November 24th of next year.
