Comedy has the lowest batting average when it comes to sequels. You can think of a couple of strong sequels to comedies, but mostly it’s Caddyshack II and Clerks 2, the kind of stuff that makes you want to travel back in time and abort the Lumiere Brothers.
So it’s with endless trepidation that I report on the happenings behind The Hangover 2; the original made so much money in a time when Hollywood is so creatively bankrupt that a sequel was a foregone conclusion. But what will that sequel be? Will our heroes from the original return to Vegas, maybe for a convention or a compulsive gambling spree? Not according to director Todd Phillips, who gave an update to EW.
“What people loved about The Hangover was not Las Vegas or the bachelor party but these three characters,” Phillips says. “I think you can take those characters and put them in other situations, and you don’t need the sell of Vegas and a bachelor party and all that other stuff.”
Let’s hope he takes a page from Airplane 2: The Sequel and sets it in space.
