You can quit bugging David Goyer about that Magneto movie, since Lauren Shuler Donner, the Shi’ar Queen behind the X-Men film franchise, says she doesn’t think it’s ever getting made. And that’s despite it having a ‘beautiful’ script. She tells Empire:
The studio has a wealth of potential stories, and they have to stand
back and decide which ones to make. And Magneto, I think, is at the
back of the queue. Maybe it’ll get made in five years – who knows?
Even if it does get made, she says, don’t expect Sir Ian McKellan to play the younger Magneto. My man is just too old! The de-aging CGI they used in X-Men 3 is too pricey.
The magazine also got major updates from Donner about the other films in the franchise. Some highlights:
Wolverine 2: It’s probably going to shoot in Japan. Why wasn’t this the first Wolverine film? “Tom Rothman preferred to set the character up with an origin story first.”
It’s also going to be chock-full of ninjitsu and karate. “What’s cool about this part of the saga is that Wolverine will be
fighting in a different style to what we’ve seen before. Mariko’s
[Wolvie’s Japanese girlfriend who is the heiress to a Yakuza clan] father has this stick-like weapon, so Wolverine will have to fight
against that. There’ll be samurai, ninja, katana blades, different
forms of martial arts – mano-a-mano, extreme fighting. We’re going to
come up with a new style of fighting. It’s going to be awesome.”
X-Men – First Class: The script isn’t done. Josh Schwartz continues to work, and while Shuler Donner says the movie will be
‘fun,’ it will not be a kiddie film. She’s using the latter Harry Potter movies as an example of the tone.
Deadpool: There’s no writer, but they hope to have one in November. Shuler Donner wants to make this the Deadpool you know from the books, not the one who inexplicably and retardedly muted in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. As Ryan Reynolds has told the press, they want Deadpool to break the fourth wall. Of course you have to slip that past the evil goalie named Tom Rothman. “I don’t know that Fox will agree with all our decisions, but we’ll see!” says Shuler Donner.
