You can’t hire a real World of Warcraft player to write the Warcraft movie, as a real player has no time in his 80 hour a week raiding schedule to spend time tapping away on a keyboard. But you might be able to find someone closer to the source material than the writer of Saving Private Ryan.

Or maybe that’s the genius of it! Sam Raimi has told MTV News that Robert Rodat is penning the Warcraft script; perhaps Rodat, who also wrote the Revolutionary War film The Patriot, has been tapped to bring some ‘realistic’ war feel to the proceedings. You know, realistic in terms of an Alliance of humans, elves and dwarves fighting a Horde of orcs, undead and minotaurs.

Raimi also tells MTV that Rodat won’t be adapting any book, quest or expansion pack in particular.

“We want to be really faithful to the game,” Raimi said. “We would have
our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that
world that feels like a ‘World of WarCraft’ adventure. Only obviously
it’s very different ’cause it’s expanded and translated into the world
of a motion picture.”
Raimi said they want to capture “the Horde and the Alliance and the mythology that takes place in the
game, and the archetypes that the game presents. I think we would try
and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true and
choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game with as
much accuracy and authenticity as possible.”

Warcraft is, of course, a ways off, with Raimi returning to Spider-Man this spring.
