Not even a week ago, our own Alex Riviello covered a few comments made by Hancock helmer Peter Berg. Talking to SCI FI Wire he mentioned the paths a sequel might take, but downplayed the timeframe-
“We’re excited to do one, but we want the script to be right and the movie to be right. We don’t feel a burning imperative to go right back into it…”
…the hiring of TV writers Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara though, would indicate that Colombia is damn sure gonna try. The Hollywood Reporter specifically mentions the writers working with Smith and Berg to further develop the mythos established in the first film. (*spoilers ahead*) In the aforementioned interview, Berg commented, “there might be another god out there,” and it really only makes sense to bring another god-being into the mix. There is only so much meat on the bones of a Superman-play-off story that has a self-defeating mysticism at its center. Thing is, it has to be tough to look at a $600+ million dollar worldwide gross and not go for seconds.
The two scribes have worked on shows like Dexter, 24, The Shield, and (!) the Crash series. They’ve written a handful of episodes on some of them, but the bulk of their experience seems to be producing the shows. Perhaps they’ll break a concept for Hancock 2 that brings in another new fresh tone, without fucking up the endgame.
