I really hope that Ghostbusters 3 isn’t one of those movies where every last half-assed bit of info, speculation and rumor becomes a big story. Of course I also hoped that when I grew up I’d have a ten inch dick, so I’m used to having my dreams squashed.
There’s been a bunch of Ghostbusters 3 stuff happening lately, and the most recent is Harold Ramis talking with Coming Soon for his new film, Year One. While chatting up the relaxed and laid back Ed Douglas, Ramis said the folowing:
“I wrote the story for the new movie with [Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg], and Dan and I’ve been consulting. We’re just waiting to see a first draft and where we are,” Ramis told us, although he’s very optimistic it will happen with Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson returning as well. “Everyone says they’ll do it, they’ve all said they’ll do it. No one has signed anything yet–we haven’t signed anything either–but there’s the spirit of willingness in the air.”
I’m focusing on this quote above all others (including Ivan Reitman telling MTV not to count him out for directing the film and Brendan Connolly’s breathless transcribing of an Empire interview where he thinks Ramis is reading a Ghostbusters 3 script exchange) because it exemplifies the problem with this (continuing) story:

What this means is that Bill Murray could hate the script and want out. Or just decide he doesn’t feel up to it. Or that the script could be terrible and nobody wants to do it and the movie goes into limbo. Or that the budget is so big that Sony balks.
The constant attention surely got this movie where it is. For good or ill (and we won’t know until we see the film, should it actually get made), the massive interest online helped spur this project into a real place. But now it’s at one of those delicate phases where everything is up for grabs. Short of someone getting their hands on the script (which isn’t even done yet), the next time we’ll hear real news on this movie is when it gets greenlit and people sign contracts.
Until then almost everything else is hit whoring. That means I’m going to try to bring you only the most relevant Ghostbusters 3 info and not just try to trick you into giving us page views.
Unless I really am worried about making rent this month. In which case all bets are off.
