Remember when you sat down to watch the Prom Night remake on Starz a couple of months ago and thought to yourself, “Ya know? This film is flirting with greatness, but the PG-13 rating is holding it back from becoming a truly great horror film.” What you probably didn’t know is that you fell victim to the sleep-inducing properties of Prom Night and when you woke up, you didn’t realize that you were actually watching Step Up 2 Tha Streets. Coincidentally, both films could have benefited from an R-rating and some onscreen murders but that’s not the point. It doesn’t matter what a film ends up with as a rating, all that matters is the original intentions of the filmmakers before they started filming.
This is why the news that Sorority Row, another slasher film apparently remade for those who twitter during The Hills, will be given an R-rating means very little at this point. This film has the glossy stain of MTV-style horror all over it.
That being said, I would guess that anyone who spent the majority of their college life in a dark room with a pile of horror movies while everyone else partied with hot sorority chicks would find the teaser poster for the film to be pretty cool– and catchy! So yes, I fucking love the poster. But before you jump on the Sorority Row bandwagon, you might want to take a moment to reflect on some other R-rated gems that boasted hot young stars and hot middle-aged stars who convinced a major studio that they could pass for a high school kid.
Ahem. Damn you, Katherine Heigl! Sorority Row his theaters on October 2, 2009.
