I like when firestorms erupt on the internet. They’ll let you see the layout of the land a little bit better when all the burning is done. For instance: the furor over the crummy subtitles on the Let The Right One In DVD/Blu-Ray makes me wonder if Magnolia ever really got how beloved this movie was. Sure, they knew it did well – it was the best earner out of their Six Shooter Series by a large margin – but the sheer lack of respect to the movie on the DVD release does seem to show that they didn’t think anybody would care if the subtitles were dumbed down.
But everybody DID care. A lot. And now Magnolia has told The Digital Bits that they’ll be releasing a new version of the DVD/Blu-Ray, this time with the theatrical subtitles. But there’s bad news for those of you who found out about the crummy subs the hard way, by buying the disc:
“There are no exchanges. We are going to make an alternate version available however. For those that wish to purchase a version with the theatrical subtitles, it will be called out in the tech specs box at the back/bottom of the package where it will list SUBTITLES: ENGLISH (Theatrical), SPANISH.”
Bummer. But now I’m glad I didn’t buy the disc yet!
Between this and the summary execution of 50 Cent from The Expendables, it looks like we’re in a new golden age of Nerd Activism.
