Last year, Terry Gilliam secured the rights to The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, the film he once tried to film with Johnny Depp and Jean Rochefort, as chronicled in Lost in La Mancha. The movie shut down after five horrific days of filming. Plagued by cast injuries, flash floods and the constant presence of fighter jets, ruining their location sound, the project was a disaster.
We knew Gilliam wanted to get back to work on the film, and now Empire reports that he’s moving forward at last. “Tony [Grisoni, co-writer] and I have started rewriting Don Quixote just
this last week,” Gilliam told Empire. “[We] finally got the script back. I re-read the
greatest script ever written and realise we gotta get rewriting! I
really wanna knock that one out in the next month or so.” Furthermore, the director says the movie is likely to be a lot better this time around, and that he’s got a lot of different ideas for it. I love hearing that he’s coming off The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus with this creative energy. I interpret that as a good indicator of a positive attitude towards the final version of Parnassus.
