I kept coming back to The Walking Dead out of blind optimism. As a horror fan, I felt obligated to support such a show. As a bizarre cultural atom bomb, I felt compelled to figure out what it is that engenders this show to an enormous amount of people. At the beginning of the last season, I finally relented. I stopped watching The Walking Dead.
After Jon Bernthal, Scott Glenn, and The Michael Rooker exited the show, I was left with a cast of characters I felt nothing for. When the show botched its attempt at crafting a great villain (The Governor), I knew I wasn’t long for this story. But I tried. I really tried.
So I can’t really comment on what’s going on in this trailer for season six (my God, has it been that long?) of The Walking Dead. I guess that guy from the “Clear” episode is a lot less crazy now? Rick and the gang are trying yet again to form a society amidst the ruins of civilization? How many times have they tried and failed at that? Is Coral dead? I didn’t see him in this anywhere, so if someone wants to tell me if he died with that stupid hat on, feel free to spoil away in the comments.
If you want to mount a defense for this show, I’d love to hear it. I can’t find any of the characters likable, relatable, or compelling in any fashion. I don’t see any real commentary going on with the zombies (last I saw, they had become nothing but recurring obstacles), although I’ll admit that the makeup effects on this show have always been its strongest point.
Maybe I’ll just go play Telltale’s The Walking Dead games again so that I feel something positive towards this property.
