Considering that Adam McKay swooped in to somewhat save the day on Ant-Man, today’s rumor (courtesy of Latino Review) about him directing a Marvel film makes a whole mess of sense. McKay’s been vocal about wanting to do this for a long time, and I have to believe that his help in keeping Ant-Man together has engendered a lot of good will with the House of Ideas.
But, what film would it be? Looking at Marvel’s upcoming slate, there aren’t a whole lot of options. Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man are all spoken for. Captain Marvel and Black Panther will almost assuredly have their directors be as progressive as their lead characters, and last time I checked, Adam McKay was as white dude as they come. That really only leaves Thor: Ragnarok and Inhumans on the docket.
Since the Thor films have had a revolving door of directors, it wouldn’t surprise me to see McKay jump onto that series. With Thor: Ragnarok gearing up to likely be the last solo outing for that character, having a surefire hand behind the camera is a good strategy (it worked for Iron Man Three).
However, Inhumans is probably the safer bet (if it’s either of these movies at all). I have to believe that such an off-the-wall and unknown property is giving Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy flashbacks. Hiring someone like McKay to help infuse a strong sense of humor and fun will go a long way in selling audiences on yet another team movie made up of characters practically no one knows about.
Or, I could start the rumor that McKay is in talks to bring us the new Howard the Duck film. Yeah, I’m gonna go ahead and start that rumor. Comment about it and spread it around, Chewers. You have the power to turn dreams into anthropormorphized realities.
