If I had a nickel for every Star Wars: Episode VII rumor making the rounds online, I would have about two hundred thousand nickels. Some of these stories need to be taken with a grain of salt, some seem pretty feasible. Now comes some news that seems likely, if not now then definitely in the next few years after Episode VII makes a huge splash.
Making Star Wars (with a name like that, you have to believe them!) says that Obi-Wan Kenobi is likely to get his own spin-off film. Kenobi’s name is now added to a long list of possible characters getting their own films: Yoda, Han Solo, Boba Fett, Watto (I wish). It was said previously that any side films wouldn’t be starring established Jedis or Siths but, looking at that rumored list, that idea has definitely been canned.
Making Star Wars’s source doesn’t have a lot of hard evidence to prove their claim so most Star Wars fans are holding off rejoicing until something official is said. It’ll be awhile before Disney and Lucasfilm reveal anything because they are obviously focusing all their attention on, you know, actually making the first film they announced. But once that’s all done and J.J. has shot his final scene, you can bet the future will be in focus. I hope that by then the powers that be realize that fans will follow this series anywhere and decide to spend some time focusing on new characters, new stories and new corners of the galaxy. If Episode VII is a huge hit (it will be), Disney and Lucasfilm will have a Hell of a lot of capital. Spend it on making something new, don’t just keep slinging out the same old characters again and again.
That being said, I sure would love to hear Ewan McGregor’s Alec Guinness impression again.
