MGM has bought and greenlit Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s script for The Cabin in the Woods, a film inspired by all of the classic horror films where there is a cabin somewhere in the woods and something noteworthy happens, usually involving a supernatural force.
According to Variety, Whedon will produce with Goddard taking the role of rookie director.
Most of the details on the film have been kept quiet but MTV recently spoke to Whedon and Goddard about the film’s basic premise.
“There’s a reason the title is so straightforward,” Goddard teased. “It’s its own sub-genre, the cabin in the woods, and this is sort of our take on it. It’s fresh and new.”
Although the film is playing in the same sandbox as Evil Dead, Goddard told MTV that The Cabin in the Woods won’t be a conventional horror film since it is coming from the mind of Joss Whedon.
“It’s got a harder and darker edge, but it’s also got classic Whedon qualities. It’ll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time.”
I say throw the Scoobies in a cabin, give Xander the flesh-eating virus and see what happens.
