Jiro Dreams of Sushi is so good that I’m curious as to why I haven’t seen the obligatory “it’s overrated” backlash that all great things eventually get. All seems quiet on that front, and I suppose I should be thankful. Maybe the film just isn’t big or popular enough to warrant that kind of response. No matter, because I’ll still take any chance to heap praise upon my favorite film of 2012.
In today’s news to make you smile, Jiro director David Gelb will be making a new food-centric “docuseries” for Netflix. Chef’s Table will consist of six parts, and will focus on the following chefs and their restaurants:
- Ben Shewry from Attica Restaurant in Melbourne, Australia
- Magnus Nilsson from Fäviken in Järpen, Sweden
- Francis Mallmann from El Restaurante Patagonia Sur in Buenos Aires, Argentina
- Niki Nakayama from N/Naka Restaurant in Los Angeles, California
- Dan Barber from Blue Hill Restaurant in NYC
- Massimo Bottura from Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy
Gelb will act as one of the show’s executive producers and directors, and Netflix will debut the series sometime in 2015. Just let me put it in my damn queue already!
P.S. – For anyone else who enjoyed Jiro Dreams of Sushi and might be looking for something similar, both seasons of PBS’ The Mind of a Chef is all on Netflix. The first season is really great, and focuses on Momofuku mastermind David Chang. The second season is excellent, and focuses on chefs Sean Brock and April Bloomfield.
