Right off the bat, let’s get one thing straight before you roll your bro-eyes at a film festival for “Girlie Pop Culture” …there aren’t two more credible, knowledgeable and straight-up awesome movie fans than Sarah Pitre and Brandy Fons. As the Alamo Drafthouse’s lead cinema programmer and the co-founder of Fons PR (a company instrumental in the operation of Drafthouse Films, SXSW, and other great festival) respectively, they make more hardcore film events happen in a week than any of us could hope to attend in a year. All of that to say, when they let loose their girlie side with a festival centered around female-targeted pop culture, you can rest assured it’s going to be a unique event.
So, while this may not be in my wheelhouse, I’m all about anything these folks are up to. And I have to imagine there are some chewers — ladies and secure dudes alike — that will be leaping to book tickets for Austin upon hearing about this.
The weekend-long festival is called Forever Fest, and already reads as a nice complement to the often testosterone-centric Austin film scene. Taking place November 1st through 3rd, the itinerary is filled with a bunch of unique events, such as:
Danceoke: Your favorite cinematic dance routines performed live on stage while the scene plays on the big screen.
EMPIRE RECORDS screening with star Ethan Embry in attendance, followed by a Rex Manning Day party.
The Cute Show: an adorable clip show presented by BuzzFeed and guaranteed to make you squee.
Book talk with Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks, creators of Go Fug Yourself and authors of Spoiled and Messy.
CAN’T HARDLY WAIT screening with star Ethan Embry in attendance
SIXTEEN CANDLES screening with select talent in attendance followed by the ultimate ’80s high school dance.
The Wild Brunch: A mimosa-fueled salute to the hottest men in cinema.
Early Screening of a buzzworthy new film this fall/holiday season.
The festival is already a done deal, but if this feels like something you’d like to get behind right away, a Kickstarter is up and active to help gather funds for venue rentals and talent accommodations. Rewards include first access to badge sales, VIP seating, and several specialty rewards like make-overs and such. Check it out, and watch for badge sale announcements on the Facebook page.
