Like sands through the hourglass, so are the sequel announcements of our lives…
FAST & FURIOUS 7 (2014)
Universal has already announced a July 11th, 2014 release date for another go ’round with this franchise, despite the release of the sixth entry still being a month away. The script is complete, a director (James Wan) in place, a villain locked in, and production is slated to begin this August. I’m guessing the majority of the regular cast whose characters survive Fast & Furious 6 will return in this (supposedly final) outing. Given that he’ll be shooting his Hercules movie this summer, one can only assume that Dwayne Johnson’s work will be pushed to the back half of the shoot…unless Universal is considering leaving him out of this entry. Regardless, he’s already getting his own spin-off flick, so Luke Hobbs will grace the screen again in the coming years.
PITCH PERFECT 2 (2015)
One of my favorite films of last year (not even kidding here, folks!) is officially getting a follow-up. Universal has set screenwriter Kay Cannon to task on whipping up a screenplay and the studio hopes to get most (if not all) of the core cast to reprise their roles. Prepare to be acatastically pitchslapped once again sometime in 2015.
SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN 2 (2015)
The fantasy sequel is targeting a 2015 release, with both Kristin Stewart and Chris Hemsworth expected to return. The script is still being hammered out and the project is currently out to directors.
BOURNE 5 (TBA)
Universal is developing another entry in this franchise, though there is no word on whether it will focus on Renner’s Cross, Damon’s Bourne, or both.
G.I. JOE 3 (TBA)
Paramount is pleased with the reception of the current film and is still moving forward with plans to build off of it. No timeline has been given as of yet, but star Dwayne Johnson is expected to return.
THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES (TBA)
THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CLOCKWORK ANGEL (TBA)
Constantin Films seems confident enough in this summer’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones that they have not only commissioned a script for the next entry in the series, City of Ashes, but a prequel as well. The latter will adapt Clockwork Angel, the first book in the Victorian-era set Infernal Devices Trilogy. Both projects are currently out to directors.
THE CROODS 2 (TBA)
DreamWorks has begun development on a sequel to this year’s hit. The voice cast (who count the illustrious Nic Cage among their ranks) are all expected to return, as are writers/directors Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco.
THE OVERLOOK HOTEL (TBA)
Warner Brothers is negotiating with former Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara to begin work on a script for a prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. No word on a particular plot at this time, but the project is expected to cull ideas from the countless tidbits of the hotel’s history within Stephen King’s original novel, as well as its deleted prologue.
THE RETURN OF DR. HORRIBLE (TBA)
Whedon’s follow-up to his supervillain musical is once the backburner once more until after he completes work on The Avengers 2, which is set to begin filming in February. Don’t worry, folks. I’m sure he’ll find time to do it soon enough.
“HEROES” (TBA)
MSN is reportedly negotiating with NBC about the possibility of reviving the show Heroes as an exclusive series for X-Box?! Weird. Anyway, if it happens, expect the follow-up to center on new characters and events, with occasional cameos from past cast members.
And now for two sequels that you shouldn’t hold your breath for: From Dusk ‘Till Shaun and 28 Months Later. Edgar Wright stated recently the the former will never happen and Danny Boyle has all but confirmed the same about the latter. So if you were still holding out hope for either film…well, you should have known better by now.
