Studios like opening weekend hauls like $41,200,00 million domestic (cr. BOM), so much so that chances for a sequel become altogether likely. Even when that film is GI Joe: Retaliation and it’s not very good. Not that I completely disliked the film. I just felt it didn’t have enough fun to justify its “dumb fun” status. The stretches with Roadblock, Lady Jaye and Flint are pretty goddamn boring. And then, of course, there’s the issue of the Joes failing to save London (never forget).
But simple math dictates Paramount has a franchise on their hands. The budget for Retaliation was considerably lower than that of predecessor Rise of the Cobra, yet opening weekend gains have been considerably more positive for the sequel. So it’s no surprise when sources confirmed to Variety that ours is a future GI Joe 3 with in it:
The muscular $132 million global bow for “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” has spurred Paramount to move forward with plans for a third installment in the Hasbro franchise, sources confirmed Sunday morning.
The seemingly snappy decision to make a third “Joe” isn’t surprising considering Par has had ample time to think it over; the first film, “Rise of the Cobra,” bowed in 2009. “Retaliation” also was delayed nine months for re-shoots and the 3D conversion.
I wouldn’t mind seeing another of these, though that Hasbro logo in front of films like Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Battleship and Retaliation isn’t instilling a lot of faith in terms of true storytelling quality. I just listed three of the dumbest films to come out in the last three years and only one of them was directed by Michael Bay. It’s just something to be wary of when a company puts as little stock in telling compelling stories with the properties as Hasbro. Then again, when you’re fronting a live-action Candyland adaptation, perhaps you take what you can get.
Note to Paramount and Hasbro: More ninjas please.
