If there was any doubt that Netflix would be going hard on the original content thing, a new announcement squelches it: The streaming platform and content creator has hired The Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski to produce an original scifi show for the platform.
The show is set to debut in late 2014, so development will likely be full steam ahead, running parallel with the sibling’s Jupiter Ascending production (which begins shortly). The show, Sense8, will tell the “gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted.”
That’s scant info to go by for now, but I’m intensely excited by the promise of mainlining a Wachowski-created TV series. That’s a hell of a way to double-down on your content strategy after the apparent success of House Of Cards. I can’t wait to hear more about the concept of the series, what the budget will be, how many episodes they’ll produce… We’ll keep our ears open.
