Megan Ellison has been well lauded as the new patron saint of film producing and it’s well deserved considering her company, Annapurna Pictures, put out trailers for the bold release of Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers today, while at the same time working hard on an oscar campaign for the brillaint Zero Dark Thirty, which followed the releases of prestigious films like The Master and Killing Them Softly this year. It’s nuts just how much talent she’s managed to back in her relatively short career. Meanwhile her brother David Ellison of Skydance Productions has been rocking and rolling with actioners like Jack Reacher and M:I:Ghost Protocol, with Star Trek Into Darkness and Jack Ryan on the way.
The last time the two siblings joined forces it was for the Coen Brothers True Grit. They’re doing it again, and this time for Terminator.
Megan Ellison’s purchase of the Terminator rights during Cannes several years ago was big news but the development has only moved in fits and starts ever since, pretty much losing all momentum when Justin Lin fucked off the project. Today’s news is that Annapurna and Skydance have joined forces to get it rolling again, and David Ellison has brought along some screenwriters: Laeta Kalogridis (Alexander, Pathfinder, Battle Angel) and Patrick Lussier (Dracula 2000). Both also come with extra credits in that Kalogridis produce both Shutter Island and Avatar, while Lussier has edited two dozen something horror films like Scream, Halloween H20, and even Drive Angry (which he wrote). An interesting pair to be sure, especially considering Kalogridis’ relationship with James Cameron.
All this doesn’t really matter though- the only news we need to hear is that Arnold is on board, and all the way. It’s his franchise so long as he remains alive goddammit. I hope EllisonĀ² knows this. The original idea seemed to be an Arnold-centric take on the Star Trek, “broken timeline” reboot method. Hopefully some form of that is still in play.
