Below we have our first look at Hugh Jackman in The Wolverine: a sequel to 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and prequel to X-Men films 1, 2 and 3*.
This project looked 1,000 times more enticing when Darren Aronofsky was attached, but director James Mangold has a few decent projects under his belt – though none great. The film’s plot is based in part on Chris Claremont and Frank Miller’s popular run with the character in 1982. It’s sacred territory for a lot of comic fans but I can’t imagine the filmmakers butchering his time in Japan as savagely as Gavin Hood and Co. did his origin.
The image itself is perfectly serviceable – the only real change being location and haircut. And it’s becoming increasingly evident that Jackman doesn’t miss an opportunity to take his shirt off. I missed the comic where “having a ridiculous amount of veins” was a desirable mutant ability.
*Figuring out where it fits in with First Class and the upcoming Days of Future Past is entirely up to you. I have a headache.
