UPDATED.
If you’re a regular reader of the site you may have seen me slobbering all over myself praising the comedic greatness that is Klown. And I will continue to drool onwards. With immodest glee! Because, as a critic, the best thing about loving a new foreign film is that you don’t even remotely need to worry about descending into hyperbole or fostering any modicum of backlash, because that’s just how profoundly sad the status of foreign films in America is. It’s impossible to oversell! It doesn’t matter how hard I facefuck this movie, half of you won’t even bother because you spotted the word “foreign” in this paragraph and you haven’t seen ads for Klown on TV. You will wait for the Todd Phillips remake. Fine. I like Todd Phillips. I’m sure it will be funny. Will it be this funny? No chance.
Klown is the real deal, America. Comedy is one of the hardest things to translate across cultural barriers. Which is why Ice Age is more popular globally than most Pixar films, because it has that Wile E. Coyote squirrel-rat that exits within a universal slapstick loophole. But this is no quirky French farce. No insufferable Italian rom-com. No high tension Asian what-am-I-watching-right-now.* This is a true test of what an illiterate dipshit you are. Because Klown is exactly what Americans pay top dollar for at the box office. But with subtitles. But better.
If you live in Los Angels, New York City, or Austin, go see Klown this weekend in the theater — like horror movies, we all know comedies are better with a crowd. But obviously the vast majority of you do not live in those three cities. The film is also available on VOD.
