When you go to a revival horror screening, it’s often to see a slasher or some kind of moody cult flick that has perhaps lost a bit of its edge over time, but you can usually still see the contextual scariness. I don’t know that Silent Night, Deadly Night is one of those films, so much as a good joke played out to feature length with a little gore and a lot of courted controversy. It’s been a few years since I went to that 35mm Of Gore screening in Atlanta, but pretty sure I remember a whole lot of laughing, from a very serious horror crowd.
Novelty aside, the original film took ole beloved Santa Claus and turned him into an axe-swinging psychopath, which definitely didn’t go over well with parents and religious groups at the time. It hit in 1984 when there were still a few things sacred. Like, five things.
In any event, this super-loose remake that currently shooting in Canada comes from The Genre Company and has a script from Jayson Rothwell that’s being directed by Steven C. Miller (The Aggression Scale). Their big star is none other than horror-remake-vet Malcolm MacDowell (trading in his doctorate for a sheriff’s badge) who is joined by Jaime King (My Bloody Valentine), Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow), Donal Logue (Terriers), Brendan Fehr (Final Destination), Ellen Wong (Knives from Scott Pilgrim!) and even Jamie Kennedy.
Anchor Bay will be pushing this baby out, and you can bet your lowest-hanging stocking that it will be ready for Xmas. Apparently this is going for a much more modern, edgy slasher tone, but apparently you can expect the return of a few notable devices of death to be homaged, with a special taxidermic gag coming to mind… Look out for it this winter.
