Director Barry Sonnenfeld is saying a lot of things right now. Take this choice nugget from his broad MTV interview. Sonnenfeld hints that there may be more in store for the MIB universe past his upcoming third entry:
“The fantastic thing about ‘Men in Black 3’ is that it totally closes out the trilogy, it answers questions that you didn’t even know you should be asking, it leaves you emotionally warm and sad and happy, and it could also reboot the franchise. But I can’t even begin to tell you how to interpret all of that. [Laughs] But I would say this: If your interpretation is that ‘Men in Black 4’ will only star the worm guys and Frank the pug, you are wrong.”
One question I didn’t even know I should be asking: was this ever envisioned as a trilogy? MIB sequels tend to pop up whenever we all assume the franchise has gone tits up – and this latest entry’s lead-up has transcended arbitrary. I’m doubting Sonnenfeld ever envisioned this thing as a sweeping story he would need three films to tell, so to allude to that now is highly dubious. And reboot? Honestly? Who’s wanting that?
