Hey look, the Saturn Awards have been around as long as me. The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror films has announced the nominations for the 33rd Annual Saturn Awards, the show that recognizes great talent and achievement in some often marginalized genres.
This year’s Saturn Awards leader is… Superman Returns? Weird, but true. The film has 10 nominations in a year that saw no shortage of truly amazing genre entertainment. The next most-nominated film is Pan’s Labyrinth, with six nods. It’s worth noting that Eragon has as many nominations as Slither – that’s just wrong. Slither should be dominating in the performance categories, no questions asked. Actually, the fact that JJ Abrams and Bryan Singer are both nominated for director – for very sub-par efforts – and Darren Aronofsky and James Gunn aren’t proves that even the genre awards can be frustratingly short-sighted and mainstream.
Without further bitching on my part, here is the complete list of Saturn Award nominees. The Awards will be given out on May 10th, at a show hosted by Heroes star Greg Grunberg and comedian Jeffrey Ross.
