Surprises for everyone on this edition of the weekend box office. Primarily, The Hitcher, of which both versions will continue to be films no one saw.
With a dead-slow weekend in what many were predicting as a strong debut for The Hitcher, Stomp the Yard instead refused to take a 50% dive and remained at number one, while Night at the Museum jumped past a $200 million take and remained firmly bolted to the number two spot. Dreamgirls continued to leapfrog and claimed the three spot, with The Hitcher debuting at number four. The Hitcher, however, didn’t care, because whether he was picked up by four or one, he would have been happy to kill either.
Will Smith and his l’il guy finally had a little wisp of cloud cover its day in the sun, as The Pursuit of Happyness dropped back to number five, taking comfort in the $150 million its put in its knapsack of self-driven success thanks to hard work and determination.
Freedom Writers slipped to number six, while wackiness ensued as four week old Pan’s Labyrinth and 17 week old The Queen broke into the top 10 thanks to their steady drip of wider release. Children of Men carried out the number nine spot and Arthur and the Invisibles was seen by enough youngsters and Besson fans to stay in the top ten, at number ten.
Alpha Dog didn’t even yelp when it received a boot to the ribs and was kicked into the backyard after muddying the carpet of the top ten, while Primeval dropped 70% to number 16 and begins to rot in the lair of what’s sure to be a quick to DVD release [Note from Nick: I saw that son of a bitch!].
In what’s sure to be a shuffle-rific weekend, Blood and Chocolate, Smokin’ Aces and Epic “why do people keep seeing these?” Movie open wide release-like this Friday.
