I wish. Despite Eileen’s very gratifying article, I chose not to do any live commenting on the Golden Globes for a variety of reasons. It doesn’t seem like I missed a whole heck of a lot. In the wake of Twitter, Facebook, and so many sites doing live coverage it just seems a little much. Same goes for the Oscars. Maybe I’ll feel differently in 2013. Regardless, here’s your list of winners and a little dosage of opinion for those interested:
Movies
Best Drama
The Descendants
Nick’s Comment: I liked the movie but I personally feel that Moneyball was most deserving of the nominated films. That said, I wish I could make The Help cease to exist.
Best Comedy/Musical
The Artist
Nick’s Comment: Love the movie. There’s no better choice here.
Best Animated Film
The Adventures of TinTin
Nick’s Comment: No argument in any way.
Best Actor in a Drama
George Clooney, The Descendants
Nick’s Comment: Love the man, love the performance, but it should have gone to Fassbender or Pitt.
Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical
Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Nick’s Comment: Without a doubt. This guy is absolutely astonishing.
Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture
Christopher Plummer, Beginners
Nick’s Comment: How can you argue against Christopher Plummer?
Best Actress in a Drama
Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
Nick’s Comment: Yawn.
Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy
Michelle Williams, My Week with Marilyn
Nick’s Comment: Yawn II: The Harvest.
Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture
Octavia Spencer, The Help
Nick’s Comment: I don’t care.
Best Director
Martin Scorsese, Hugo
Nick’s Comment: Violently disagree. I found Hugo to be decent but hardly some transcendent film. Especially since it boasts only one solid performance. This category is actually rife with bad choices, because it sells 2011’s directorial output way short.
Best Screenplay
Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen
Nick’s Comment: Moneyball deserved it. Distilling that text into something so entertaining is incredible. Woody’s fine, but this movie isn’t some revelation.
Best Score – Motion Picture
The Artist – Ludovic Bource
Nick’s Comment: Contagion wasn’t even nominated, so in lieu of that this is a good pick.
Best Original Song – Motion Picture
“Masterpiece” – Madonna
Nick’s Comment: Ok. I’m trying to care.
Best Foreign Language Film
A Separation, Iran
Nick’s Comment: Haven’t seen it, but everyone’s been jerking off all over it all year. I hate it simply because the poster has the dude in the background with his mouth open.
Cecil B. Demille Award
Morgan Freeman
Nick’s Comment: Rude man on the Dreamcatcher set!
Television
Best TV Comedy or Musical
Modern Family
Nick’s Comment: Go fuck your family.
Best Television Series – Drama
Homeland
Nick’s Comment: Based on the first half season, yes. Otherwise this should have been Boardwalk. That American Horror Story got nominated for anything other than Most Tone Deaf Horror pisses me off.
Best Mini-Series
Downton Abbey
Nick’s Comment: I have no idea.
Best Actor in a TV Drama
Kelsey Grammer, Boss
Nick’s Comment: I have heard good things about this, but really wish it was Bossk.
Best Actor in a TV Musical or Comedy
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes
Nick’s Comment: I could not get into this show at all.
Best Supporting Actor in TV Series, Mini-Series, or Made-for-TV Movie
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
Nick’s Comment: One cannot argue the magic of Dink.
Best Actress in a TV Drama
Claire Danes, Homeland
Nick’s Comment: She had me at “wash my vagina with a rag instead of a shower” in episode one.
Best Actress in a TV Musical or Comedy
Laura Dern, Enlightened
Nick’s Comment: Good to see ol’ Dern getting some attention for more than being the daughter of Ratface.
Best Supporting Actress in TV Series, Mini-Series, or Made-for-TV Movie
Jessica Lange, American Horror Story
Nick’s Comment: Worst show.
Best Actor in a TV Movie
Idris Elba, Luther
Nick’s Comment: Even though this show is like forty years old already, Idris is the owner of all things.
Best Actress in a TV Movie
Kate Winslet, Mildred Pierce
Nick’s Comment: I love Winslet like supper, even though this looked like the film the word “boring” was invented to describe.
