Hey there Los Angeles Fright fans! Time for another Friday Night Frights! (like us on Facebook, if you dare!)
It has now been one year since Sebastian O’Brien and I launched Friday Night Frights at The Cinefamily theater in Los Angeles with Tucker & Dale vs Evil. Since then we have done many great shows, both big and small. While it is great to pack a theater for a Jason movie or triple feature of Hellraiser films, the shows that are the most gratifying to us are when we’re given a chance to shake some dust off a forgotten gem. Last year we exposed people to The Unseen and The Kindred, and to celebrate our first birthday – this Friday, Jan 20, at midnight – we’ve got writer/director David Schmoeller in to present his weirdo Klaus Kinski creepfest, Crawlspace. Considering he was trapped on a film set for weeks with Kinski, one can safely presume that Schmoeller has a few stories to tell.

Equalling his turns in Woyczek or Aguirre: The Wrath of God for pure moment-by-moment mania, Klaus Kinski gives one of his career-defining performances as the uber-creepy Dr. Karl Guenther in the 1986 voyeur-tastic freakout Crawlspace! The film concerns an apartment building run by our madman Klaus, and the impossibly accommodating labyrinth of air ducts that allow the good doctor to spy on his tenants. No one can ooze creepiness like Kinski, and director David Schmoeller wisely milks this super-power for all it’s worth. The film is a loving and effective tribute to Psycho with a few nice twists up its sleeve, a fun ‘80s vibe, and a great score by regular De Palma collaborator Pino Donaggio. Plus, there isn’t a moment when Kinski’s face is onscreen that won’t make your skin crawl — with delight!
