Well we are almost at the end of 2011 so I thought it would be a good time to review my film going experience for the year.*

Thanks to working an unsocial job for most of it,  my total of films watched is down on previous years to a measly 90.  Out of those however 45 were new to me so on the whole I will count that as a success.

Now a normal film review would only cover films released that calendar year, but I have decided to review everything I watched on equal footing and give them all a chance to win the pointless categories I have created.  And for full disclosure I have provided the link to my listal movie watch list so you can be amazed at the crap I watched.**   Also i set the cutoff as thr 3rd of December – when I started this blog so anything after that does not cout.

So without further stalling, here we go.

BEST NEW MOVIE:  This category refers to films I saw for the first time this year. Be it on DVD or in the Cinema.

And the nominations are:

One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

The Social Network

The Wrestler

Moon

And the Winner is: MOON.

I saw some great films this year but Moon is hands down one of the best movies I have ever seen, let alone this year.  Hats off to Duncan Jones for this little gem.

Honorable Mention:  X-MEN FIRST CLASS.  I love this film and the more I think about it the more i think it’s the best of the “X” movies.

WORST FILM SEEN THIS YEAR:  Speaks for it’self really.

And the Nominations are:

Sex and the City 2

Year One

Battle LA

Skyline

And the Winner is:  SEX AND THE CITY 2.

Believe me this was hard.  Skyline almost won this but everything about SATC2 is an affront to mankind. In a recession we have this bunch of rich moaning middle age women moaning about how their perfect little lives suck. I hate them, I hate them all. More so for the fact that the TV show was actually pretty good and this film basically craps all over it’s legacy.

Honrable Mention: TRANSFORMERS DARK OF THE MOON:  I actually liked the first one and this film made me feel bad for doing so.

BEST REWATCH:  So we are talking about films I have seen before but watched again.  In this case the reason is important so I have included it in the nominations.

Ghostbusters:    For seeing it in the Cinema (finally)

Transformers the Moive:    Becase the annual Chud watch along is always great

Star Wars :  Because I now own the untamperd DVD copies and I could finally see it as I remeberd it.

Flash Gordon:  Because it was the last movie I watched on my last night shift.

And the Winner is:  GHOSTBUSTERS.  Alight, lets be honest it wasn’t going to be anything else was it?

Honrable mention:  WIZARDS:  My wife found it on DVD for me after years of searching and it was just as trippy and awesome as I remebered.

BASED ON REAL EVENTS:  A catagory for all the films based on something that actually happend. (artistic liberites aside)

The Young Victoria

The Social Network

Into the Wild

Holy Flying Circus

And the Winner is:  THE SOCIAL NETWORK.  Ok I havent seen enough of these, I almost had to include the TV moive about Meatloaf i watched. But even with that in mind The Social Network is a fantastic film.

Honrable Mention:  HOLY FLYING CIRCUS.  The story of the aftermath of the release of “Life of Brian” told in the style of a Monty Python sketch. If that doesn’t get your attention you are dead inside.

Best “classic” I watched this year for the first time:

Or…

I am an uncultured swine who watches to many action movies:

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

All the Presidents’ Men

One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest

And the Winner is:  ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST.   It’s a truly brilliant movie that deserves all the praise it gets.  That final scene is at the same time one of the most heartbreaking and uplifting moments in any movie I have seen.

Honrable Mention: All the President’s Men.  Hoffman and Redford make jornalisim look cool.

and finally…

The Top 10 of 2011:  To make it fair I am only going to list the top 10 “first views” of 2011.

10. SHARKTOPUS – Hell I love a good B movie.

9.  EXTRACT

8.  THE OTHER GUYS

7.  THE WRESTLER

6. INTO THE WILD

5. ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST

4. HOLY FLYING CIRCUS

3. THE SOCIAL NETWORK

2. X-MEN FIRST CLASS

1. MOON

Right that’s it for this week’s blog – it’s long enough already.  Next week I may actually publish the first in that new series I have been promising.

Untill then…

*  Plus, by doing it now it looks like everyone else was copying me when they do their own later in December 🙂

**Although I must point out i gave up grading them half way through and now it’s just a list.
