• http://chud.com/nextraimages/bites2.jpgSimon Pegg couldn’t make it to Comic Con this year, but he did send along a funny video greeting. It has finally made it onto the internet, thanks to the folks at Peggster.com – now what about those great Hot Fuzz microteasers? Click here to see the video on YouTube.

  • Last week I asked who would rescue Rescue Dawn. The answer is MGM. They bought the film at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, making it one of the first buys of the fest. Early reports on the film, alas, indicate that it starts strong but peters out in the second half. Also purchased was Fido, a zombie comedy about a town that keeps the shambling undead as servants. Lionsgate picked that up.

  • Heath Ledger is talking about being the man who smiles in The Dark Knight: "It’s definitely going to stump people. I think it’ll be more along the lines of how the Joker was meant to be in the comics, darker and more sinister." Ahh, spoken like a true non-comic reader who doesn’t realize that in fifty years of Batman comics the Joker has probably appeared in almost every conceivable form and mood. “It’s going to be more nuanced and dark and more along the lines of a Clockwork Orange kind of feel. Which is, I think, what the comic book was after: less about his laugh and more about his eyes." From the Toronto Star.

  • The trailer for the new generation James Bond movie, Casino Royale, hit late last week. It looks good, and it looks like the Bond producers learned from their competitor, Jason Bourne. Everything in the trailer seems amazing and exciting but also humanly possible. There are no invisible cars. Click here to see the trailer.

  • Holy shit, Ben Affleck’s back. My review of Hollywoodland featured effusive praise for the lantern-jawed actor, and I felt a little weird saying so many good things about his performance (I’m a pretty big fan of Affleck the guy, but as an actor he’s left a lot to be desired). Turns out I wasn’t alone in that – Affleck won Best Actor at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Is it possible that this could begin an Affleck run at a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars (it has to be supporting – he stands no chance for Best Actor)? Hard to say – the Venice awards raised a few eyebrows when the barely seen Chinese movie Still Life.
