About time we caught up with the slew of recent casting from Tarantino’s next:
After months of auditioning various actresses for the role, it seems that Quentin Tarantino has finally decided to go with his original favorite for the role of Broomhilda…..
Kerry Washington has been cast as “the long-suffering slave wife of Django (Jamie Foxx), who is freed by a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) and taught the tricks of that trade. Django’s real desire is to be reunited with his wife, who winds up in a variety of unsavory places and whose travails drive the plot. It leads to a confrontation in Candyland, a ranch owned by the notorious Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).”
As previously revealed, it is the brutalizing of Django and his wife at the hands of a trio of plantation owners that sets the whole plot in motion. M.C. Gainey and Tom Savini will make up two of the three that get to Sergio her Corbucci.
Anthony LaPaglia has also boarded the film and will be getting to use his native accent for a change. LaPaglia will be playing the leader of a group of unsavory Australians that Django encounters on his journey. According to LaPaglia, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be among that same group as his brother. As far as I know, that is the closest confirmation of JGL’s involvement that we have been given so far.
“It’s wildly ambitious and imaginative, deals with that subject matter in a way it hasn’t been dealt with before,” LaPaglia told [Deadline]. “The way the cast has shaped up, it’s exciting to be involved.
Also entering the fray are Dennis Christopher as ‘Leo Moguy’, Misty Upham as ‘Minnie’, and longtime QT-collaborator RZA as ‘Thaddeus’. Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Don Johnson, Michael K. Williams, Laura Cayouette, and Gerald McRaney currently make up the rest of the cast in Tarantino’s “Southern-fried spaghetti western”.
As a massive fan of both Tarantino and Westerns (particularly of the pasta variety), I’m stoked as hell to see this. Quentin has cooked up one hell of a cast so far and considering Django Unchained doesn’t shoot until the Spring, it’s quite likely that a few more choice actors will land roles between now and then. The wait for December 2012 is going to be a long one, but I suspect it will be more than worth it.
