Hammer Films has set John Pogue (Quarantine 2: Terminal) to direct The Quiet Ones from his own screenplay. Allegedly based on a true story, the film will revolve around a team of Cambridge academics in the ‘70s who record their findings as they attempt to exorcise a poltergeist from little girl. Who does Hammer want to topline their new foray into the exorcism subgenre? Why Nicolas Cage, of course!
I’m going to go ahead and assume that Cage will be signing the dotted line. This is right up his alley and unless something causes a conflict, we all know he’s going to do it. Hell, the man already has SIX films set for release next year. I’m actually beginning to wonder if Cage and Bruce Willis are challenging one another to see which A-lister can cram in more projects for 2012. As it stands, Bruno is ahead by one point. Come on Nic, you can take him! Besides, how can you deny Planet Earth another batshit performance…..let alone one where you are performing an exorcism? Get your Nouveau Shamanic ass on that shit!
Calming down a bit, I’m glad that Hammer has returned. They promised it since they went belly-up in the mid-80s and finally made good on it two years ago. Many expected them to just start cranking out remakes of their old classics*, but the powers-that-be wisely chose to start with more original material for the time being. Sadly, their first three productions** were nothing to get excited about. The tide now appears to be changing. Last year’s Let Me In*** was met with positive response and The Woman In Black (starring Daniel Radcliffe) looks poised to be one of the more interesting releases of early 2012. Also on deck for next year is the Jekyll & Hyde-esque Wake.
I am honestly down for anything they want to toss our way. I would be lying, however, if I didn’t admit a massive hope for a new onslaught of Gothic horror. I am tired of modern-day horrors. The past decade has been a fun one in the genre, but I need a change of scenery. Amidst marathoning classics over the past few weeks, I have come to realize that I really miss old school horror movies. I long for torch-lit castles, creepy mansions, and fog-filled forests. I crave vampires and werewolves that lust after young girls out of a desire to fill their bellies with flesh and blood, instead of pining away for Kristen Stewart. I want to beware the beat of cloth-wrapped feet, dammit! Come on, Hammer! You brought it all back in the late 50s and kept it going strong for over a decade. It’s time to step up and resurrect Gothic horror once more!

**- Beyond the Rave (2008), The Resident (2010), and Wake Wood (2011). While the latter was their fourth project to see release, it was actually shot in 2008.
***- Based on the Swedish film Let The Right On In and the novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist. Hammer also owns the film rights to Lindqvist’s zombie novel, Handling The Undead.
