So with pretty stellar buzz and a multinational promo tour about to get Tintin all up in your stations, feeds, commercials and asses, naturally it’s time for sequel questions to start flying hard. Despite initial budget concerns that nearly shuddered the picture, the film was always pitched and plan as a trilogy that would begin under Spielberg’s direction and continue under Jackson. Well now that the first one seems set to do more than enough business to justify the first sequel, Jackson and Spielberg have no problems detailing to THR that not only does Jackson still plan to direct the sequel, but it’s already well in motion…
“[Sony and Paramount] were willing to do one movie with us and then give us the financial werewithal to develop a script, do all the visual storyboards and get it really in launch position. So we can launch pretty quickly on a second movie. The script is already written.”
The two directors were mentioning already-happening pre-production occurring on the sequels as long ago as 2009, so it’s no surprise that the sequel’s fuse is already lit. What’s more interesting to hear is that Jackson apparently responded with a simple, definitive “yes” to the question of whether he’d be following up The Hobbit with Tintin 2.
This kind of production is uniquely suited for allowing Jackson to work on it simultaneously with other projects, but the man is still going to be stretched pretty thin once The Hobbit returns to full swing and actually starts nearing release. I wouldn’t expect Tintin 2 for a number of years, which leads me to believe the pair when they say they haven’t really considered who would direct a third outing. That decision may as well be a century off in terms of what could change between now and actually acting on it. Who knows, maybe by then the planets will be aligned so that those years-old Edgar Wright rumors could come true…
